A $100M Check for the Creator Economy

"Creators are permeating pretty much every corner of the economy. Itโ€™s hard to name an industry or a facet of life that is some not being impacted by creators."

This quote from Ezra Cooperstein, President at Night, kicks off a monumental partnership between Night and The Chernin Group, resulting in an influx of $100M into the creator economy and the birth of Night Capital in attempts to "build a new company focused on control investments in businesses that can utilize creators to grow and thrive."

So what does this mean for the creator economy? Besides the millions of dollars being placed into the creator space, this is also a massive step in legitimizing content creators as businesspeople. Once branded as purely entertainment, content creators are now sliding their way into every nook of media and branding, and with this partnership, even more, brands will begin to have creators front and center. What creator do you think Night Capital will pick up first?

Misinformation on TikTok

A few weeks ago, I wrote an article on TikTok becoming the new Google for GenZ; in this article, I break down this new trend and why it may be occurring as well as how you may be able to take advantage of this evolution. While I mainly labeled this transition as an opportunity for creators, I overlooked the negatives that come along with search engines and misinformation.

In a recent study from NewsGuard, researchers found that when searching for popular news topics (from COVID cures to Russia's invasion of Ukraine and beyond), 20 percent of the popular videos contained misinformation.

With one in five videos containing misinformation, especially in the medical and political sectors, this raises concern for TikTok becoming the primary source of information for young people all over the world.

Although TikTok says it vets every video posted with AI-driven review, NewsGuard found that out of 102 million videos violating its Community Guidelines, less than 1% of those removed were considered โ€œharmful misinformationโ€ as defined by TikTok.

While there is no clear path, this misinformation coming to light is a step in the right direction for cleaning up these sectors that are riddled with dangerous ideas and actions for the latest news. Have any suggestions on how TikTok can begin working on these glaring issues? Please share your thoughts with us on LinkedIn or Twitter!

Creator Economy News ๐Ÿšจ

This week in the creator world, every content platform is copying each other, Zuckerberg loses $71 Billion, and Spotify launches audiobooks.

  • Instagram acting as a social platform chameleon of sorts is getting more and more like TikTok with each update. What you don't know? 'Most Reels Users Have No Engagement Whatsoever.'

  • On the same note of social platforms mirroring each other, TikTok rolls out "TikTok Now,โ€ where, like BeReal, users will be prompted to showcase what theyโ€™re doing at random times throughout the day. Can we go back to the days of unique social platforms?

  • Mark Zuckerberg has lost $71 Billion during his transition into the metaverse. Down from a high of $142 Billion since last September, this cut in capital may signal that the push into the metaverse may not be the best move for old Zuck. Or will it be the best play he's made yet? Either way, he's still richer than all of us put together, even with the pay cut ๐Ÿ™ƒ.

  • Like a digital Barnes & Noble, Spotify launches their audiobook marketplace, allowing you to read, listen, and watch all in one place. At least Spotify knows how to differentiate themselves a bit more than a majority of entertainment platforms!

You should see these ๐Ÿ‘€

  • Did anyone say FREE socials guide to TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram? Thank you to David Paykin for the free insights, this is what the creator community is all about!

  • Did anyone see the GTA 6 Leaks? I got GTA 5 when it was released in 2013, and have been waiting for these leaks for literally almost a decade. I don't know if I should thank or curse the hackers who leaked these, but it definitely got me excited!

  • Drake comes after Anthony Fantano after Fantano posts a fake conversation about a Vegan Cookie recipe in lieu of posting Drakes actual message. Good on Fantano for making light of this situation and not reacting, this can be a lesson for all creators in dealing with these difficult situations, although we hope Drake doesn't come after you, too.

  • Casey Neistat is BACK in NYC and the nostalgia is at an all-time high.
