💰Creator Makes $1M From Notion, TikTok to Relaunch A Creator Fund, Susan Says Goodbye, & More.
A creator making a million per year off of Notion templates, TikTok is trying out another creator fund, Susan Wojcick steps down as YouTube CEO, & More. This week in the creator economy:
Happy Wednesday! Lot's of CreatorPad news and updates coming later this week, but we'll leave that for a proper announcement. Until then, here's the latest in the creator economy!
TikTok Tries A Creator Fund... Again 🥴
TikTok has announced that it will launch a revamped version of their creator fund, called Creativity Program. We all know that their initial creator fund didn't do very well amongst creators, so how will this program be any different?
Well, transparency is seemingly the same as it used to be. The only solid info we have on program eligibility is minimal, at best:
You need to be 18 years old
Your videos will need to be longer than 60 seconds
You need to meet the minimum follower and video view requirements (rumors have this number at 10x current levels, with 100k followers being the minimum requirement)
Your account has to be in good standing with TikTok's guidelines
While there's not much info out just yet, I think the most important thing for creators to take notice on is the 60 second minimum videos for eligibility. Not only is this going to drastically change the type of content we see on the platform, but it also creates a new opportunity for long form creators. We know that YouTube and TikTok have been "borrowing" ideas from each other for the past few years now, but can this sway YouTubers to begin optimizing their long form content for TT?
Another important thing to take notice of is the lack of mention of how this compensation structure will be different. It was mentioned in the TechCrunch article linked below that TT's team reworked the formula for paying out creators, but, they would not specify how it's been reworked.
Lot's of changes and noise from TikTok's end, but not much to show for it just yet. I'll keep my eye on this one and will keep bringing you the most up to date news, but for now, I'm still team YT (even if we did lose Susan 🥲).
Creator Economy News 🚨
This week in the creator world, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcick has stepped down, the new CEO has some unpopular opinions, FB and IG begin testing paid verification, a nostalgic tv show cast starts their own podcast, and more.
The cast of the popular early 2000's show, Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide, have started a podcast called Ned's Declassified Podcast Survival Guide. Memories will be unlocked, and nostalgia will be had. 📓
YouTube and creators in general are bummed about the departure of former YouTube CEO, Susan Wojcick. And others are a bit nervous at the new CEO stepping in and what he may implement. Did someone say YouTube NFTs?
Remember when the entire internet imploded when Elon Musk announced paying for verification on Twitter? Welp, Facebook and IG are gonna do it too, and no one cares.
You should see these 👀
This creator hasn't posted in almost a year. Why? He's making $1M per year off of Notion templates. 🤯
Dhar Mann responds to poor pay allegations for his workers. His response? These claims are "100% not true." I guess there's more to come on this one.
Pinterest begins allowing up to 5-minute videos on the platform. Why not add one more platform for posting on? Get that money, creators! 🤝
Weekly Spotlight 🔦
Changing it up a bit with this week's spotlight!
Kenny Beats is one of my favorite musicians of all time, and his most recent album, Louie, is my current favorite album. This live session on NPR's Tiny Desk series features Kenny and some of the artists on his album including the insanely talented Remi Wolf, wild man JPEGMAFIA, and a new name on the scene, Nami Ondas.
While this album is absolutely incredible (seriously, go check out the album visualizer), the Tiny Desk was such a unique way to hear these tracks. As they are masterfully mixed on the studio album, listening to the rawness that the live music brings adds yet another layer to this album that struck such a deep chord with me.
While this spotlight is a bit different than what we usually showcase every week, I wanted to share a piece of art that I find to be super moving and inspiring. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did, and I hope it draws some inspiration!
