What to Do When AI Is Plagiarizing Creators?🤖

Image: Y Combinator (Hacker News)

Every Monday morning I sit and search for topics to populate this newsletter. When searching this week, I stumbled upon a Y Combinator post that was touching on the 1%'ers of the creator economy vs everyone else.

When I clicked on this article, it wasn't only deleted, but the top comment was someone calling out the author for using ChatGPT to write the piece.

Now, this didn't surprise me all too much. Lots of people are using ChatGPT to create articles; I'd bet you AI wrote at least one thing you've read today.

Fast forward about 30 minutes, and I found this post on Twitter:

Now I was really curious. The article, originally written by Alex Kantrowitz, was referenced by this bot and fully plagiarized a handful of the content. Obviously, this is a no-no, but it does pose an interesting question: How can we prevent AI from straight-up stealing content, and how can those who use AI be more careful not to plagiarize others?

For the former, that's a question that I'll let smarter people than myself tackle (where are all my programming peeps?!). Still, for the latter, I believe education and light shed on the fact that these AI programs can sometimes rip content from a source without any changes is key.

Perhaps a post such as this will open eyes to this issue and make those who use the program more aware of how it works rather than just copy-pasting a response from a bot.

In the case of this story, the "author" who posted on HN (Hacker News) seems to mention that he/she was "using these tools to avoid awkward sentences/paragraphs" (as per their comments on HN).

If this were the case, it still stands that as a writer who is publishing work publicly, you need to be vigilant about the accuracy of your information especially if using an AI tool.

So for all you writers out there utilizing programs like GPT3, maybe use these tools as a starting point rather than something that writes for you. Craft and hone in on your own voice; it makes for a better read anyways.

Go check out the original article by Andrew Kantrowitz below, it's well worth a read (and not produced by a bot)!

YouTube's Mass Demonetization Explained 💰

In the most recent episode of CreatorPad's podcast (yea, we have a pod, go check it out!😎), Alex breaks down the recent rollout of YouTube's mass demonetization.

If you haven't heard, YouTube launched a series of new monetization rules that are leaving many creators' old (and new) videos to be struck, meaning they cannot earn any revenue from these videos anymore.

This sudden rollout is leaving many creators upset because of the lack in transparency regarding the rules and rollout.

Rules such as cursing, blood (RIP video game creators), and even acronyms (WTF?!) can now get you demonetized.

Will you be the next victim of YouTube's demonetization? Learn more about this rollout and its effects on creators in the video linked below!

Meet Ty PigPatrol!

Ty Kleeb, better known as Ty PigPatrol is an angler and a YouTuber who is producing some of the best fishing content on the platform.

Ty travels around the U.S. and other countries with one mission in mind: to catch big fish. I watch a lot of fishing content on YouTube, but there's something about the rawness of Ty's videos that are so catching.

The lack of music paired with the screaming drag on his reel pulls you deep into the moment, like you're the one with the rod waiting to see the beast that's on the other end.

With four years of posting and literally HUNDREDS of videos, Ty has been chasing monsters to pursue his passion while keeping his fans hooked on his amazing catches.

(Did anyone like my puns?)

Keep up the awesome work, Ty. Tight lines!
