TikTok Doubles Down on Long Form ⏱

The short (form) king has recently announced a push to allow even more creators to access their long form video features, paywalls, and more.

As always, I’ll break down the biggest details in bullet points below but the gist is that TT is expanding accessibility to its Series feature. This will allow for a more YouTube/Patreon like feel, solidifying their approach to become the de facto video content platform. Let’s get into the nitty gritty!

• the feature, dubbed ‘Series’ introduces a paywall feature where viewers can unlock exclusive content for paid access.

• Creators can price their content between $1 and $190. Not insane, but better than nothing!

• Premium videos can now be up to 20 minutes long, double the previous 10-minute limit. Here come the podcasters!

• For eligibility, you have to be in a region which allows Series, you must be 18+, and have 10k followers. Seems as though there’s a few more barriers to entry in place here, but it’s much lower than it used to be!

• Users with at least 1k followers can apply if they have sold exclusive content elsewhere, but approval is not guaranteed.

While I’m a firm believer in YouTube being the king of creator platforms, albeit not the best (bring back the dislike button), this move to lowering the barrier to entry will likely prove to a lot more long form content on TT.

While TikTok has been on the coals for a hot minute, especially after Montana’s move to ban the app, I like to see the innovations for creators who don’t adhere to short form exclusively.

This week in the creator world, KSI in college classes, Dharr Mann starts up a new show with old (young) faces, Ninja jumps off the Twitch ship, Dream is going mask on, creators make a publishing label, and more. This week in creator economy news:

• Dharr Mann is taking a spin on Disney originals by bringing back two fan-favorite characters to star in their very own show. Let’s just hope these kids are getting paid…

• We all know that KSI is a beast at building brands around his content creation. So much so that he’s now a topic of discussion among students as a creator who’s doing content (and branding) right.

• One of the largest streamers in the world swiftly hopped off of Twitch and right into the competitor’s arms at Kick. Check out why Ninja might be making the move (or getting Twitch to reconsider).

You should see these 👀

• Remember when Dream took his mask off and the entire internet essentially made fun of him? Well, the mask is going back on. Honestly, he took it like a champ and the announcement video is top tier, way to make the best of an annoying situation, Dream. 🌝

• I Stan Ludwig and Schlatt, and now they’re making even more music that would usually get your video claimed for copyright. Let’s hear those Animal Crossing vibes in your new videos, creators.

• Speaking of Schlatt… OTK has just announced a new publishing label that is creator owned and creator led. Now that’s what I’m talkin’ about!! 👏

Vibe alert!! So if you’re an avid reader of this newsletter, you know I nerd out about music. One of my favorite go-to’s recently has been longer form mixes by DJs who dig the crates, and play some oldies.
